OPEN MIC Logo & Poster design

About OPEN MIC Bologna:

A group of students and artists who love music, and above all, live music. Our studies and professional aspirations are related to the management and organization of the cultural landscape in town. We study the processes of innovation and creativity of the entire urban fabric, dealing with numerous cultural and artistic activities in the Bologna area.

Bologna’s live music scene is the subject of this project, as the current music scene is dominated by professionals. In this context, our passion for live music inspires us to recognize that the live music scene has to be complemented by a different form of offering for the enjoyment of music, that entails involving both professional and amateur musicians. From this we propose a new format of live music performance that succeeds, for the first time in Bologna, to offer a stage for those who do not normally have it, and an opportunity for those musicians who woul like an opportunity to experiment with a live audience. Our idea is inspired by an incredibly successful form of entertainment in the United States and Great Britain – the Open Mic night. Open Mic night is an crucial component of live performance in many countries, as these impromptu and experimental performances are crucial in the incubation of new forms of performance art. A simple but revolutionary concept: the event consists of a stage, a few microphones, an audience and artists from the community to serve as both performers and members of the audience. These nights are usually housed inside bars or pubs where musicians, songwriters and amateur actors performing for a short period of time – five to fifteen minutes – following a schedule determined at the beginning of the evening as artists arrive on a first-come first-served basis.

This format provides an important opportunity for artists to emerge and demonstrate their skills in front of a live audience, without having to go through the normal process of more formal artistic legitimization. It also offers the opportunity for amateur musicians to perform simply and freely without restrictions or implications. Finally, professional musicians also benefit from being able to “try out” new songs or arrangements without having to sustain a whole show. The Open Mic has experienced incredible popularity in recent times, thanks to the multi-dimensional nature of the art, the dynamic atmosphere of collaboration between artists and art lovers, and the unique opportunity for artistic experimentation that benefits both the artist and the audience.
